On the occasion of the celebration of Women’s Day. From the Clinic Cloud blog we wanted to review the most outstanding women in medicine . Women who in many cases faced the prejudices of their time and managed to stand out in the field of health. This is the list.
1 Metrodora approx. 200-400 AD
Metrodora was a Greek doctor celebrat for having written On the Diseases and Care of Women , the oldest known medical text written by a woman, at a time when the study of women’s health focus almost exclusively on childbirth. Her work was widely adopt by other important physicians of antiquity.

2 Gertrude Belle Elion 1918-1999
American chemist Gertrude B Elion is recogniz for her discovery of Purinethol, the first fundamental drug in the telephone biz treatment of leukemia. Elion decid to dedicate herself to medicine when her grandfather died of cancer when she was 15 years old, with the firm intention of finding a cure for the disease. During her lifetime, she manag to develop up to 45 treatments that help the immune system fight cancer, a colossal achievement that earned her the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1988.
3 Francoise Barré-Sinoussi 1947
The Parisian scientist Francoise Barré-Sinoussi is famous for her discovery of HIV as the cause of AIDS, a disease to which she has dedicat much of her research work. Something that led her to win the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology in 2008. Her work has helped millions of people living with the disease and gives hope to finding a cure for HIV.

4 Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin 1910-1994
Dorothy was a crystallographer who discovered the structure of insulin, vitamin B12, and the structure of penicillin. That discovery allowed her to develop semisynthetic penicillins that prevented the growth of various bacteria, saving countless lives. Furthermore, she accomplish all of this despite being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at age 24.
5 Marie Curie 1867-1934
Marie Curie won a Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903, and another in Chemistry in 1911, the first and only woman to have been honor twice. She was recogniz for discovering, together with her husband Pierre, two new chemical elements in the Book Your List periodic table: polonium and radium.
